This summer, the tower of the Grote Kerk in Breda will ring out in a particularly festive manner: this year marks exactly 500 years since Breda appointed its first city carillonneur. This milestone will be celebrated with ‘August Carillon Month’ – four summer evenings filled with carillon music, right in the heart of Breda’s city centre.

All concerts begin at 7.00 pm and, as befits a carillon, can be heard throughout Breda’s city centre.

  • On 6 August, city carillonneur Paul Maassen will open the series with music from the last 150 years.
  • A week later, on 13 August, Jeroen Heijungs will bring the first 150 years of Breda’s carillon tradition to life.
  • On 20 August, Gijsbert Kok, city carillonneur of The Hague, will present a brief overview of five centuries of carillon music – followed by an atmospheric soirée with a live ensemble in the Begijnhof.
  • The series will conclude on 27 August with American carillonneur Julia Littleton, who will once again bring the 500 years of history to life through sound.
